Trying to conceive can be an emotionally and physically challenging experience. Fertility is influenced by multiple factors involving the female reproductive system, male reproductive health, age, medical conditions, lifestyle and, in some cases, factors that remain unexplained.
At Nalam Yoga & Naturopathy Clinic in Perumbakkam, Chennai, we provide a personalised, fertility-supportive approach that combines naturopathy principles, yoga therapy, nutrition, physical activity, stress-management strategies and healthy lifestyle practices.
Our goal is to support overall health and wellbeing while you pursue your fertility goals. This approach may be used as supportive care alongside appropriate fertility evaluation and medical treatment when indicated.
What Is Infertility?
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines infertility as a disease of the male or female reproductive system characterised by failure to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. Infertility may result from male factors, female factors, a combination of factors, or unexplained causes.
Infertility is therefore not solely a woman's health issue. Both partners may need evaluation.
Possible Female Factors
- Ovulation disorders
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Endometriosis
- Problems affecting the fallopian tubes
- Uterine or other reproductive-tract conditions
- Age-related decline in fertility
- Certain hormonal or medical conditions
- Previous pelvic infections or surgery
- Other reproductive health conditions
Possible Male Factors
- Abnormal semen parameters
- Reduced sperm concentration
- Reduced sperm motility
- Abnormal sperm morphology
- Problems affecting sperm production
- Certain hormonal conditions
- Testicular or reproductive-tract disorders
- Erectile or ejaculatory difficulties
- Some medications, medical conditions and lifestyle factors
In some couples, no clear cause is identified despite appropriate evaluation.
Because both male and female factors can contribute, professional fertility guidance recommends evaluating both partners when appropriate.
Why Consider Naturopathy and Yoga as Fertility Support?
Naturopathy and yoga should be viewed as supportive lifestyle and wellbeing approaches, rather than substitutes for fertility diagnosis or medically indicated treatment.
A fertility-supportive programme may focus on areas such as:
- Balanced nutrition
- Healthy physical activity
- Weight management where appropriate
- Sleep habits
- Stress management
- Emotional wellbeing
- Tobacco and alcohol-related lifestyle factors
- Sustainable daily routines
- General metabolic and cardiovascular health
These measures can contribute to overall health, but improvement in general health should not be interpreted as proof that infertility itself has been treated.
The appropriate plan depends on the individual's health status, reproductive history and fertility evaluation.
Lifestyle recommendations should always be individualised.
Yoga Therapy for Fertility Support
Yoga can be included as a mind-body component of fertility-supportive care.
The purpose is not to claim that particular yoga poses can unblock fallopian tubes, increase egg quality, improve sperm count or directly cause pregnancy. There is currently insufficient evidence to make such claims.
Instead, yoga may be used to support areas such as:
- Stress management
- Relaxation
- Physical activity
- General wellbeing
- Body awareness
- Sleep quality
- Emotional coping
Personalised Yoga Matters
A fertility-supportive yoga programme should consider the individual's health and reproductive circumstances.
Modifications may be necessary for people with:
- PCOS
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic pain
- Back or joint problems
- Recent surgery
- Chronic medical conditions
- Pregnancy
- Fertility procedures
- Physical limitations
People undergoing fertility treatment should coordinate exercise and complementary practices with their treating fertility team.
Yoga is generally considered safe when appropriately practised, but injuries can occur. Appropriate instruction and additional precautions may be needed for people who are pregnant or have health conditions.
Fertility Support for Women and Men
At Nalam, fertility wellness is approached as a couple's and individual health concern—not exclusively a women's issue.
Support for Women
Depending on individual needs, lifestyle guidance may address:
- Nutrition and healthy eating
- Physical activity
- Stress management
- Sleep
- PCOS-related lifestyle factors
- Weight management where appropriate
- General preconception wellbeing
Women with irregular or absent periods, significant pelvic pain, suspected endometriosis, previous pelvic surgery or other fertility risk factors should seek appropriate medical evaluation rather than relying only on lifestyle interventions.
Support for Men
Men may also benefit from individualised lifestyle and wellness guidance.
Areas that may be discussed include:
- Nutrition
- Physical activity
- Weight management where appropriate
- Sleep
- Tobacco and alcohol use
- Stress management
- General metabolic health
- Sexual and reproductive health
Male fertility evaluation is important because male factors can contribute to infertility. If semen abnormalities, erectile difficulties, ejaculatory problems or other reproductive concerns are present, appropriate evaluation by a qualified medical professional or male reproductive specialist may be required.
Naturopathy Alongside Fertility Treatment
Naturopathy and yoga should complement—not replace—appropriate fertility evaluation and treatment.
Depending on the underlying cause, medical fertility care may include:
- Treatment of ovulation disorders
- Management of underlying reproductive conditions
- Surgical treatment when indicated
- Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
- In-vitro fertilisation (IVF)
- Other forms of medically assisted reproduction
The World Health Organization's 2025 guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infertility.
A person undergoing fertility treatment may choose to use yoga, relaxation, nutrition and lifestyle support alongside medical care. However, complementary approaches should be discussed with the treating fertility team, particularly before starting supplements, herbal products, restrictive diets or intensive exercise.
Do not postpone recommended fertility investigations or treatment in the hope that naturopathy or yoga alone will resolve infertility.
When Should You Seek a Fertility Evaluation?
Appropriate timing depends on age, medical history and individual circumstances.
For women younger than 35 without known risk factors, fertility evaluation is generally recommended after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse without pregnancy.
For women aged 35 or older, evaluation is generally recommended after 6 months.
More immediate evaluation may be appropriate for women over 40 or for people with known risk factors for infertility.
Evaluation may also be appropriate earlier when there is a history or clinical concern associated with impaired fertility.
Importantly, evaluation should involve both partners when appropriate, rather than automatically assuming the cause is female.
Why Choose Nalam Yoga & Naturopathy Clinic?
At Nalam Yoga & Naturopathy Clinic, our approach focuses on evidence-informed lifestyle and mind-body support rather than promising a guaranteed fertility outcome.
Individualised Assessment
We consider relevant health history, lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, stress and reproductive concerns.
Yoga Therapy
Yoga, breathing and relaxation practices can be selected and modified according to the individual's physical condition and needs.
Nutrition Guidance
We focus on practical, balanced and sustainable nutrition rather than extreme diets or unproven fertility foods.
Lifestyle Support
Guidance may address physical activity, sleep, stress management and healthy daily habits.
Support for Both Partners
Our fertility-wellness approach recognises that reproductive health may involve male factors, female factors or both.
Responsible Integrative Care
We encourage appropriate medical fertility evaluation and do not position naturopathy or yoga as substitutes for medically indicated infertility treatment.
Your Fertility Journey Deserves Individualised Care
Infertility can have many causes, and the appropriate treatment varies from person to person.
Naturopathy and yoga may provide valuable support for general health, lifestyle habits, stress management and wellbeing, but current evidence does not establish them as standalone cures for infertility.
At Nalam Yoga & Naturopathy Clinic, our focus is to provide personalised, evidence-informed support through:
- Naturopathy-based lifestyle guidance
- Yoga therapy
- Clinical nutrition
- Physical activity guidance
- Stress-management practices
- Sleep and healthy-routine support
This approach can be considered alongside appropriate fertility evaluation and treatment.
